THE WORD OF GOD John 1:1 - 5

The Word of God is the only source of every contact , interaction, manifestations and all relationship from creation to eternity between man and God.  By the word, the visible and the invisible came into existence, so the word also provides the medium of awareness and of all knowledge about creation.  It formed the raw material of all things.  John 1: 1-5 declares “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God.  All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made.  In Him was life and the life was the light of men.  Hebrews 11:3 says “Through faith we understand the worlds (planets and the cosmos) were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

This brief message is intended to redirect our attention , affection and conviction to the application, operation and reality of the word of God.

Is the word of God True and Effective?  As human beings, we prefer to have a proof or an evidence before believing concerning the word of God.  The Biblical writings and claims about God and Creation, about life today and in eternity has of recent been receiving serious attention from the science and technology world; great confounding and confirming evidences and proofs of the word of God is everyday coming up from laboratories.  So the word of God is True, Reliable, Unfailing, Powerful and Swift, able to reach every nook and cranny of all creation irrespective of location and distance.  Read this, Hebrews 4: 12-13 “for the word of God is quick (swift), and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intent of the heart.  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight; but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
You can see that in all the passages we have read, the word of God is personified, it is active and living.  To confirm this, Jesus said in John 6:63 “It is the spirit that quickeneth (i.e. make alive) the flesh (physical and canal abilities) profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.  Giving more credence to the word as the spirit and living, John 1:14 says “And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the father) full of grace and truth.
It is by the word of God that we see and know the reality of God and the origin of all creation.  If you decide not to believe the word of God, then it implies that you do not regard the power of the word but even in physical, normal and secular life, words from the only medium of communication effectively that can be attributed to whoever said it.  So if a governor or president or even our parents promise to do a thing or told us about past events, we immediately believe them just because we consider the person to be trustworthy and their words reliable.  The word of God cannot be faulted nor can it fail like the words of men.  Since God in His omniscience decided to be hidden from human eyes and also made His word spirit, there is only one way to find out if it is true and real or not.  That one way is to ATTEND to the word.  What does it mean to “attend to the word” ? It is giving attention to the word, listening to the word no matter who is speaking.  If you do not pay attention, you gain nothing even when the words were directly meant for you.  So ignoring God’s word can only deny you it’s benefits, power and wisdom.  In John 17:17 Jesus Christ said the word of God “IS THE TRUTH”.  So where can you find the truth about yourself, the world and eternity?  Only in the word of God; until you attend to the word of God, He cannot attend to you.  You may choose to attend to the words of men such as philosophers, scientists, occultists, mystics or even a non-truth religious theorist who say one thing and do another, non of their words will give the real answer to any of your questions.
I want to assure you that the word of God as written in the Bible is dependable, reliable, unfailing, powerful, the only available truth, living and directly of and from the living and the true God, that is why it changes life without the use of external force.  It produces salvation, restoration, blessings, protection, miracles, eternal life and all heart’s desires according to God’s will.

Now how do you attend to the Word?
There are the major ways

  • Believe the Word
  • Study the Word
  • Apply the Word.

(1) Believe the Word : Believe the Word: In God’s principle, you believe before seeing its result or effect. Acts 13:38-39 “Be it known unto you that through this man (Jesus the Word and Truth) is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: and by Him all that BELIEVE are justified from all things, from you could not be justified by the laws of Moses.  John 3:16 declares that whosoever believes should not perish but have everlasting life.  And the Lord Jesus in Mark 11:22 instructed; Have faith in God. i.e. believe God by His word and in Mark 9:23 He also said “If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes.  In Mark 10,27 He said “for with God, all things are possible”.

(2) Study the Word : The written word delivered to us today is the Bible.  It is often referred to as the Logos in Greek.  In Joshua 1 verse 8 God said  “This book of the law (God’s principles) shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shall meditate therein day and night, that thou may observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shall make thy way prosperous and thou shall have good success”.    The word of God in the book called the Bible is the word in our hands, but the word must be written in our heart as we believe it for its power to be effective in our lives.  To study and know the word, we must (a) Listen to and hear the word : Romans 10:17 say “So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.  You must listen to and hear the preaching of the word because what you hear determines what you know eventually.  (b) You must read the word of God : Reading here is not limited to the Bible passages but also literatures and commentaries that will enhance your understanding and deeper knowledge of what is written in the scripture. Proverbs 2: 1—5 advice “My son, If thou will receive my words and hide my commandments with thee so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom and apply thine heart to understanding; yea if thou criest after knowledge and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver (riches) and searchest for her as a hid treasure, then shall thou understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God”. © Store up the word : The process of studying the word and meditating or pondering on the word as we study is what stores or writes the word of God on the palates of our heart.  Without the word in our heart, there is a vacuum which will be immediately filled by all corrupt knowledge, superstitions, fear, falsehood and deception around us.  Our physical life, character, attitudes and behaviors is masterminded by what we have in our heart.  So the word inside is the spirit inside and the standard outside.  What makes our human spirit alive and strong is the quality and the strength of the word inside.  Sin rules where the word of righteousness and holiness is missing because Psalm 119:11 states “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee”.  Ignorance of the word is the source of defeat we suffer from the hand of the wicked and evil one.  It is the word stored in us that lightens our inner being and banishes away every ignorance and darkness.

(3) Apply the Word : You cannot apply what you do not have, neither can you give what you do not possess.  So the word you do not have in your inside cannot be applied whether physically or spiritually.  In Luke 6:46 the Lord Jesus asked “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”, in verse 43 He declared “For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.” In verse 45, He continued “A good man out of the good treasure see it? The word) of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.”

So you apply the word by
= Living the word that is in your inside, for example, the truth in the heart will not allow corruption on the outside.  The fear of God on the inside will disallow indecency and immorality outside.  Likewise, true love of God will dissolve all hatred, bitterness, unforgiveness and vengeance.

= Act on the word or exercise faith on the word; believe that God is true, faithful and able.

= Confess the word: The last line of Luke 6:45 reads “for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh”  In God’s principle, what you say is what He does.  If you speak right, using the good treasure of God’s promise in the Bible, that is what He will do for you; but if you speak evil words (relying on human ideas and emotion), that is what you will get too.

= Pray according to the word : James 4:3 states “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts (or satisfy your evil desires and corrupt pleasures).”  So you must ask with right motives in accordance with God’s word.

Now understand these:

  • It is the word of God on your inside that prospers the soul and your physical being.  It formulates in us good virtues and values.
  • The word in our heart is the weapon of victory in our lips.  It is the antidote to failure and all forms of depravity and oppression.
  • It liberates us from all ungodly influences and bondages.
  • It opens our eyes to see things in God’s ways and perspectives and not in man’s pervasive and mundane ways.
  • The word enables us to know where we belong now and in eternity; in it we know god’s will.
  • By the word, we receive insight, inspiration and the spirit to discern, invent and excel.
  • The scripture is the only gazetted document of God’s doing among men, His promises and guidance to all our desires and claims through all ages.
  • The only access to these mysteries is Jesus Christ.  Accept Him now as your Lord and Saviour.
Remain Blessed.
